Wii 2 might be called “Nintendo”, touchscreen controller confirmed

Posted in Nintendo by Conner Flynn on June 6th, 2011

Nintendo has already promised its next-gen console will make its debut at E3, and rumors continue to circulate about just what this “Wii 2″ can do, and what Nintendo will call it. “Wii” was odd, but what about simply “Nintendo”?

According to Game Informer, “Nintendo” is supposedly among the current frontrunners for names. Nihon Keizai Shinbun confirms the talk of a 6-inch touchscreen, along with a camera and its own internal power source. That will allow it to be used as a standalone gaming device, while the camera can also be used to create an avatar. Sounds good so far. We will know more shortly.

Alright Nintendo fans. Sit down. Relax. Grab a Mario stuffed animal or something. This is bound to excite you. We have some potential news for you about the upcoming Wii 2. This is supposedly a video shot by a sneaky developer that gives us a rough look at what we can expect from the console.

We will know for sure what the Wii 2 is all about in a few weeks at E3, but for now hit the video. The controller looks like they slapped a screen on a GameCube controller. The console looks pretty typical of what you would expect. Something that looks like a docking station for the controller can be seen at the end. It all seems pretty legit. What do you think?

Ubisoft talks about the Wii 2′s power

Posted in Wii by Conner Flynn on May 12th, 2011

Well we already suspected as much, but Ubisoft’s CEO Yves Guillemot mentioned that his teams will be able to use a lot of the work done on titles for the current HD consoles when developing for Nintendo’s new platform. Guillemot says, “So we will not have to redo completely the games that we create. We’ll be able to use all the capacity the console is giving but also use all the work we do for the other platforms.”

Good news for them and it’s not a surprise, but it does confirm that Nintendo’s next console will be as powerful or more powerful than the current generation of HD consoles. Yes, it should be a great console. Then again these are the same people who released the Wii with only 480p, so who knows.

If you are a Nintendo fan, then chances are that you have noticed that there seems to be a drought of 1st-party Nintendo titles this spring. In fact there aren’t any. Zero. Nada. Zip. So what does it mean?

Well, it may just mean that we can expect the new console very soon. Kotaku has compiled some data of Nintendo’s game release history for the past 10 years and it seems to back up this speculation. It is looking very likely that we will see Nintendo’s next console this spring.

The Xbox 360 is about six-years old. The PlayStation 3 and Wii almost the same age. Microsoft and Sony had said that their current consoles will have 10-year life cycle and it looks like they were pretty on target. A Wii 2 is even expected this year to compete with the 360 and PS3′s Kinect and PlayStation Move motion controllers.

Now we have word that Square Enix, makers of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest to name a few, are already planning to open a 100 staff studio in Canada next year. This way they will be ready for the next generation consoles and get their games out accordingly.

Blu-ray equipped Wii 2 coming next year?

Posted in Wii by Conner Flynn on August 10th, 2010

Word on the street is that the next version of the Nintendo Wii will be hitting the market next year with both an HD output and a Blu-ray drive. That Might help it catch up to the Sony PS3, but Nintendo is still very behind.

Take this with a grain of salt since it’s just a rumor for now. HD on the Wii is certainly welcome, but we’re not too convinced on the Blu-ray part.
