Dell dropping Streak tablet to $400 unlocked

Posted in Dell by Conner Flynn on December 22nd, 2010

For those of you who have been holding out and waiting for a deal on the Dell Streak, we have some good news. Dell has just dropped the pricing for its Streak device in the US. They obviously want to move some more units and drive sales figures up.

The unlocked models have dropped by $180, to a new low of $400. Android-powered models from AT&T will still retail for $550 and $650, in 16GB and 32GB capacities. I know which deal I would go for. Does this news entice you into buying a Streak?

Dell Streak SNES controller dock

Check out this Dell Streak with an SNES controller dock. The Dell Streak’s ability to work with standard USB keyboards also allows it to work with a modified SNES controller. We never thought we would see the day when these two gadgets combined.

The controller has basically been turned into a keyboard. This one comes from modder 0TheRain0. Yes, it is fully functional and totally awesome. This is the coolest mod we’ve seen in a while.

Dell to open source Streak code

Posted in Dell by Conner Flynn on August 26th, 2010

Dell has made a promise to open source its Streak code. Dell’s official blogger Lionel Menchaca says that Dell will meet “all applicable requirements” in due time. The version of Android 1.6 used by Dell is based on a Linux kernel and fits under the GNU Public License (GPL), which requires that it open-source any new code.

Without Dell’s custom portions of software, programmers haven’t had access to the drivers and other code that speaks to the Streak’s hardware. There is no deadline for when code must be published, but it’s usually assumed code will be available immediately or shortly before any hardware or software ships.

Dell Streak on sale August 13 for $300 on AT&T contract, or $550 without

Posted in Dell by Conner Flynn on August 10th, 2010

Dell has made us wait with a long delay, but now the company is finally ready to start selling the Streak this Friday to everybody. If you choose a new two-year contract through AT&T, it will cost you $299.99. On the other hand, if it’s freedom you desire, it will cost you $549.99.

If you signed up for the pre-sale, you can place your order a day earlier on the 12th. Sadly, it looks like it’ll be launching with Android 1.6, nothing newer. Hopefully a 2.1 update with 720p video capture arrives quickly.

Dell Streak to be available in late July in the US

Posted in Dell by Conner Flynn on July 21st, 2010

The Dell Streak is so well known it’s as if it’s been available in the US for some time now. In fact, it’s odd that we still don’t have a US release date for Dell’s Streak. Dell isn’t talking.

However, the company’s US product page has been updated to say: “available for purchase in late July.” It would have been nice to get more of a heads up, but at least it is already late July, making your wait a small one.

Dell has a new selection of cables, plugs, adapters, and cases for your new Streak, which is available in the UK and will be available for us this summer. The HDMI dock may exist, but right now Dell is only listing an AV dock without going into the TV connectivity options.

There’s a kickstand-equipped wallet case, a spare battery and sync cables, and an international travel kit. Prices start at £24 ($35) and the car- and TV-enabling docks will cost you £55 ($80) each.

What’s this? Some pictures of the docking station and an interesting case for the upcoming Dell Streak have now surfaced. A docking station for a 5-inch device was a given, but it’s awesome that the docking station offers an HDMI connector, allowing you to hook the device up to a larger display.

Other connectors in the dock include a line-out port and USB. There’s also the protective case for the Streak, with a built-in kickstand so you can enjoy your videos.

Also known as the Mini 5, the Streak will be launching first in Europe with O2 Telefonica, and then “later this summer” with AT&T in the States, according to CEO Michael Dell. NOT on a Baseball field, wearing nothing but a cap.

Dell showed the device off at the Citrix Synergy conference. We know that it runs Android, but they won’t say which version it will actually be. Screen-size is a 5-inch capacitive display, and there’s also be a 5-megapixel camera.

Dell’s 7-inch and 10-inch Streak tablets

Posted in Dell by Conner Flynn on April 18th, 2010

Leaks from an internal Dell announcement reveal that Dell is getting ready to unveil its Streak line of tablets. Yeah, that isn’t a great name. The tablet will come in two different sizes. There’s the larger 10-inch Streak that will compete with the iPad, and a smaller 7-inch version for folks who want it more portable.

That’s about all we know. The smaller Streak could arrive as early as later this year, with the large and in charge version arriving in 2011.
