Mystery device identified as Rockchip Android MIDTurns out that the mysterious Android MID we told you about last week is a Rockchip concept intended to demonstrate the Chinese chip makers new RK2808 720p-decoding chipset. PConline played with one of the prototypes and it holds up pretty well, even though it isn’t meant for the consumer market in it’s current form.

It supports the usual multiple windows of an Android smartphone and all the menus and features of the OS are there. Of course, we won’t be seeing it on store shelves any time soon, sadly. But in time, production devices using the RK2808 will start showing up.

Cheap Chinese Android phone on the wayRockchip Electronics Company is an MP4 chip supplier from Fuzhou, China. They love their work, but they yearn to branch out. And so they are about to dive headfirst into the wonderful world of Android with a trio of mobile chips: the RK2718,RK272 and RK2808.

The RK2808 would be the first mobile chip from China to support Android, and Rockchip also has plans to roll out a RK2808-based PMP sometime this autumn. This will be followed by their very own Android handset later in October. The Android handset will be powered by the RK2808 chip.
