Rock Band surpasses $1 billion in sales

Posted in Games by Conner Flynn on March 26th, 2009

rockband2-logo-sbThat’s a lot of rockin’. I hope some of you are taking it easy now. As things stand right now, Rock Band has 614 songs available from 269 artists, 11 full albums, and a buttload of revenue. More revenue than all other games in 2008.

For those of you keeping score, we are talking $1 billion in total North American retail sales, with 40 million tracks sold. Plus Rock Band and Rock Band 2 have won 50 industry awards. Frankly I’m surprised you can’t all hear each other rocking all over the continent.

Pearl Jam’s debut album comes to Rock Band

Rock BandIf you think about the early 1990’s music scene one of the most popular genres was Grunge and one of the biggest bands in the Grunge movement was Pearl Jam. The band’s debut album launched on August 27, 1991 and went on to sell 12 million copies.

The band and Harmonix announced today that along with the reissue of the debut album called Ten from Pearl Jam, the entire album would be coming to Rock Band as download content. The reissued album and Rock Band track pack will be available starting on March 24, 2009.

Rock Band bleeds into the real world

Rock Band bleeds into the real worldApparently Harmonix has some interesting new features in store for RockBand.com. The site will be getting a complete overhaul with features sure to make any plastic instrument playing nerd wet himself a little. Some of the new features are an online photo creator for photo shoots with your Rock Band 2 band so you can use the pictures online.

Next, users can link these photos to real-world merchandising like posters, T-shirts, stickers for your band etc. If that isn’t geeky enough, and I’m sure it’s not for some, you can get action figures made from your band members “for about 70 bucks”. Looks like music games are no longer just about songs and fake instruments. Now they’re also about bringing fake bands into the real world where they can all annoy each other and realize that on a real instrument they suck.

Rock Band 2 for Xbox 360 ships Sunday

Rock Band 2One of my favorite games to play on my PS3 is Rock Band. My family and I and several friends from the neighborhood get together almost every weekend for a faux jam session. The game is addictive and the coolest part is that unlike most video games — even the ladies enjoy Rock Band.

Harmonix, EA, and MTV Games announced today that Rock Band 2 would be shipping for the Xbox 360 on September 14 — that is next Sunday. The same week the new Rock Band 2 instrument controllers will also begin shipping. However, the controllers may not be available the day the game launches.

Rock Band 2 is official for the fall, with a new guitar
While most of you are still addicted to the original Rock Band, Harmonix is already looking toward the future at what else they can put in your home. That’s why they’re getting official with Rock Band 2 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The Xbox 360 will be launching in September and the PS3 version will follow later in the year. Of course, with a new Rock Band, you’ll be getting new instruments, like this Fender Stratocaster.

Don’t worry, you’ll still be able to use your current gear if you have it all decked out in stickers and such, or if you want to save a few bucks. Looks like you’ll also be able to carry over all your downloaded content as well as being able to download and play new tracks on Rock Band 1 once Rock Band 2 is available.
