Nintendo 3DS to be powered by a Marvell CPU?

Speculation is that Nintendo’s upcoming 3DS portable 3D gaming handheld could be powered by Marvell. Marvell co-founder Sehat Sutardja dropped some hints during their quarterly earnings call. He says that Marvell chips will soon be used to power a game console.

“Approximately 15% of the sequential increase (in quarterly sales) was due to the initial production revenue from our ARMADA application processors, primarily as a result of a major customer preparing to launch a new gaming platform,”

The new Marvell Plug Computer is packing a 2GHz Armada 300 processor, WiFi, Bluetooth and a hard drive. But alas, it isn’t for all of you consumers. So you and your smudgie fingered hands can’t have one.

The unit is marketed as a development platform for building embedded devices. Nothing on price yet, but remember this isn’t for you. It’s for developers. You are just browsing. That’s it. Nothing else to see here. Move along.

ASUS to launch Android handset in ’09

ASUS to launch Android handset in ‘09DigiTimes is now reporting that Asus is planning to launch an Android-based handset, which confirms some rumors we’ve heard. They were invited to join the Open Handset Alliance after all. The phone will apparently be available sometime in the first half of 2009, and might land in Taiwan first under ASUS’ own brand before coming our way in the form of different customized models. As you might expect, no other details at this point, but sources say that ASUS will be phasing out its use of the Ericsson Mobile Platform for handset platforms from Qualcomm and Marvell.
