Amazon launches German Kindle Store

Posted in Amazon by Conner Flynn on April 21st, 2011

Amazon had already entered the UK’s e-book market last year and now the company has it’s sights set on Germany as it has now launched the German Kindle Store, with more than 650,000 titles. With the launch, the German Kindle Store instantly becomes Germany’s biggest e-bookstore.

It has about 25,000 German-language titles, thousands of free classics, and a large collection of independent newspapers and magazines. Customers also have the ability to buy the latest Kindle and Kindle 3G models directly from Amazon.de, along with free, German Kindle apps for iPhone, iPad, PC and Android. I bet the site is extremely busy today.

We’ve all been waiting for some more details on Nintendo’s 3DS and now a German tabloid has leaked the launch date of the portable 3D gaming system. We aren’t sure how reliable these leaks are, but word is that Japan will get the 3DS on November 11.

This will be followed by a European launch in the Spring for about 200 EUR, or U.S. $270. An official announcement should come from a Tokyo press event by Nintendo on September 29th.

Liquid Wood could replace everything plastic

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on August 29th, 2010

We use a ton of oil to create plastics for everything from watches to bicycle helmets. It hasn’t been easy to find a replacement material that can be just as tough, versatile and easy to produce, but German inventors have developed a new material that has a lot of promise. It could replace everything plastic using something as natural as wood.

It looks like wood and feels like wood. The material is called Arboform and is produced after combining lignin, a discarded element of regular wood with natural resins, flax and fiber. Arboform is ideal since it can be molded into any object form which is normally made using petroleum products.

Steel ‘velcro’ can handle 35 tons and up to 800 degrees celsius heat

Posted in News by Conner Flynn on September 6th, 2009

Steel 'velcro'And you thought that the velcro on your jacket was impressive. These Velcro fasteners were made by German engineers and can withstand 35 tons of force. Needless to say, these aren’t for your clothes. One side has spikes and the other has steel brushes, so it’s just like real velcro. It can also withstand heat of up to 800 degrees Celsius.

And if you tear these Velcro strips vertically, where it’s stronger, it can hold up to 7 tons. We aren’t sure how much of this stuff it actually takes to support that much weight, but it’s pretty amazing anyway. Especially when you consider that just like everyday Velcro, it can be opened up without specialized tools and used again.

Wii balance board surfs Google Earth

Wii balance board surfs Google Earth
A group of German students have somehow managed to use the Wii Balance Board from Wii-Fit to navigate their way around Google Earth. Specifically to surf Google Earth. Talk about a creative way to use a Wii accessory.

It’s really not all that impressive, and these guys are no Silver Surfer, but I guess it’s the first step in being able to fly or surf around the world virtually. And when that day comes, it will be sweet to do this in a nerd hero costume, while playing theme music. Video below.

Lusso art-deco turntable costs a fortune

Lusso art-deco turntable costs a fortune
I can only assume that this awesome looking art-deco style turntable is the direct result of Tim Burton and Beetlejuice wanting to listen to some vinyl together.(The stripes. Get it?) The design is really simple, yet awesome. Thing is, you’ll need a hefty bank account, as this thing is priced to suck up your money faster then a gold-digger needing botox.

Prices start from $47,000 upwards. That’s a ton of dough for a bunch of black circular rings with a silver aluminum backdrop. Germans being the engineering elite that they are, I’m sure it’s top notch, but we’re playing freakin records here. The Lusso features three height adjustable connected cones made from alternating layers of aluminum and black acrylic.

Fake iPhone says “Moo”

Fake iPhone says “Moo”
We’ve all seen our share of fake knock-offs, especially with the iPhone. Some are just straight clone attempts, while others are a bit strange. This one is just plain F@%#ing weird. The Toggolino Phone shames itself quite nicely, right there in the packaging.

Apparently the device comes packaged with a German kit that teaches German rugrats how to associate words with animals or…something. You could very well be looking at the next Speak and Spell toy. Looks pretty fun actually.
