Virgin Mobile to have $40 true unlimited data plan

Posted in Virgin by Conner Flynn on August 22nd, 2010

This weekend Virgin Mobile confirmed a major revamp of its Broadband2Go data plans that could see a return to real unlimited data. Instead of the four plans offered today, it would simplify everything to just a $40 unlimited monthly plan and a $10, 100MB 10-day plan.

A leaked memo suggests that the changes will go live on August 24. Both MiFi routers and modems should work with the cap-free access. This sure would heat up the competition among carriers for mobile data. Clear and Virgin’s US parent Sprint offer unlimited Internet, but only for their WiMAX services.

AT&T confirms cheaper data plan discussionsRalph de la Vega from AT&T has confirmed that the company has in fact been looking at lowering the cost of data plans. Instead of cutting the cost of unlimited access, the company plans to introduce lower priced plans with limited bandwidth.

“Right now we continue to study what is the best thing that is available, not just from an iPhone point of view, but what you can do to stimulate additional demand,” said de la Vega, adding, “[w]e view Apple as a strategic partner for us, a very good partner to have now and into the future.”
