Hitachi ships thin 7mm 500GB HDD

Posted in Hitachi by Conner Flynn on December 19th, 2010

Hitachi has announced that it is shipping its new and super thin 500GB HDD, the Travelstar Z5K500. This new HDD is a single platter drive that is just 7mm thick. An average 2.5-inch HDD is 9.5mm thick. This new size allows the Hitachi HDD to be used in standard 9.5mm devices and it can also be used in ultraportable devices that need a thinner HDD.

The drive also has low power needs with 1.8W in operation and 0.55W while idle. The drive is also quiet with 1.9 bels idle and 2.1 bels when in use. No info on pricing just yet.

Hitachi outs 320GB world’s fastest 7mm hard drive

Hitachi is claiming the world’s first 320GB hard disk drive to spin at 7,200 RPM in a 7-mm thick package. The 2.5-inch Serial ATA 3Gbps Travelstar Z7K320 boasts a 1,334Mbps maximum transfer rate with a 16MB cache. This HDD draws 1.8 watts during read/write and 0.8 watts while idle, at 23dB when idle or 24dB when seeking.

Thanks to the slim form factor, it’s ready to boldly go some places that standard 9.5-mm thick drives can’t. Expect these to hit production lines in August and appear in next generation ultra-thin netbooks.
