Pinnacle unveils small USB TV tuners for PC, Mac

Pinnacle Systems is launching yet another wave of new USB TV tuners for those who want to bring television to their computers. These compact tuners are known as the HD mini Sticks and they’ll be available in PC or Mac offerings for around $120 or $130, respectively.

The Pinnacle HD mini Sticks are USB-powered tuners which, in general, let you view and record digital over-the-air TV (ATSC) and unencrypted digital cable TV (ClearQAM) for SDTV and HDTV with resolutions of up to 1080i. One can make use of these devices as PVRs with timeshifting capabilities that enable users to record, pause or rewind live TV. Recordings can be scheduled as well via programming data from an Internet-based guide.

Equinux TubeStick hybrid

Equinux USA recently introduced a new hybrid USB television tuner hybrid for use in the U.S. market. It is called the TubeStick hybrid and you’ll find it pricing for around $130.

The Equinux TubeStick hybrid houses “two TV receivers – one for digital TV reception and the other for analog. The digital tuner is designed to decode free over-the-air ATSC signals (HDTV and SDTV) and unencrypted cable (Clear QAM) signals. The analog tuner can tune free over-the-air analog signals and with the included breakout cable, users can capture analog signals from a variety of sources including video cameras and game consoles via either S-Video or composite video connections.”

Diamond Multimedia TV WonderDiamond Multimedia recently unveiled to the masses a new line of TV tuner cards. Seven models make up this TV Wonder line and they are available now.

Diamond Multimedia said its new TV Wonder cards let you view free-to-air analog and digital cable signals on your computer. The HD 600 series of TV Wonder cards includes a single hybrid tuner and remote control, while the HD 650 Combo come with a dual tuner, FM tuning and remote control. All models work with over-the-air Digital TV/HDTV (ATSC), Clear-QAM Digital HD Cable, and over-the-air/Cable Analog TV (NTSC).

Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-950Q TV Tuner stickHauppauge has some handy new TV tuners hitting the market this week at CES 2008, one of which is the WinTV-HVR-950Q. This USB-based tuner stick’s claim to fame is it’s ability to not only receive the popular NTSC analog cable and over-the-air ATSC high-def formats for North America, but also the ability to pick up clear QAM digital cable TV.

The WinTV-HVR-950Q tuner stick connects to a PC via USB and allows users to watch and record television on their desktop PC or notebook through a standard TV cable. The tuner comes with a credit card sized remote control to navigate channels, recording options and the ability to pause and resume live TV. It also comes with Hauppauge’s SoftPVR and SoftMCE software for MPEG-2 encoding. This allows the device to record television to the computers hard drive without needed some expensive MPEG encoder.
